A petite mustang stands elegantly on a hill-top as the sweeping landscape of the Salt Wells Creek rises behind her. The misty sunrise breaks through the clouds just enough to highlight her face as she turns towards the sun.

In art, I look for the warmth of nature. In this image, the saturated tans and browns mix with the golden shimmer of the sun and make me thankful for the underrated beauty of late autumn. As the bright colors of summer fade away, a monochromatic splendor of earthy browns emerge for a short time before dulling with winter. These few weeks are my favorite of the year.

Recently, I was photographing wild horses and a man pulled up in this truck. He leaned out of his window and said "Why photograph these horses when you can photograph pretty ones?" I would have loved to have seen my facial expression in response. It was a question that made no sense, and I couldn't understand why he felt the need to approach a stranger and say this.

Though slightly annoyed, it was a comment that didn't phase me. Wild horses are a source of awe and wonder. Their beauty is raw, authentic, and unparalleled. The more you look, the more you appreciate the individuality of each horse. More so, as the seasons pass, you look forward to the evolving lineage of the new generations. The markings and colorings that help define their herd and the corner of the world that they call home.

If I had to describe this photo and this horse in one word, it would be beauty. Plain and simple. While some people don't take the time to see it, I believe there are far many more of us that do.

Very few of our country's horses have ever known freedom. It is my hope that the ones who do will know nothing more than what it's like to run free as an American mustang.
