I've been traveling to many of the Herd Management Areas hoping to spot what's left of the wild horses in the United States. This past winter, I spent an entire week the Western Utah portions without any luck. I think when it was all said and done, I visited 6 different HMAs between Utah and Nevada. I was about to throw in the towel, thinking they had all be rounded up for auction. Sitting on my tailgate, making myself a sandwich, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. Out of nowhere, two wild horses came darting across the horizon. I had to drop my sandwich, grab my camera for 2-3 shots, and as quickly as they had come, they were gone.
It was a surreal moment. I had spent days searching for any signs of them
and they magically appeared the moment I stopped looking.
I took it as a sign to not give up. That it's worth the effort, time, and money trying to document and preserve the beauty of these animals, wild and free.
